What is the thought behind putting the cooktop on the opposite side of the island as the main sink? It seems like someone would have to do a lot of walking around with their hands full when using this kitchen. »
RDM Architecture The kitchen was designed specifically so that clients, who enjoy cooking together, could both access the cook top from either side or both sides at once. The triangle is actually incredibly efficient if you take a look at the previous picture you can see that the fridge is directly opposite the microwave and the double ovens are behind the photographer. It made sense to have a prep. sink at the island in addition to the main sink so that multiple people could prepare meals simultaneously. The microwave is under the counter for aesthetic reasons and because they do not use it very often. While the layout might not work for everybody, the homeowners have been very happy with the functionality of the kitchen. One of the many reasons to hire an architect. Ronique Gibson Determine your entertaining lifestyle first. Do you enjoy cooking while entertaining, or prefer to stay out of the kitchen once the guests arrive? If so an open concept floor plan with a large bar, and area to talk and socialize will be in order.
If you are a more experienced cook who enjoys having many cooks in the kitchen, consider multiple sinks and preparation areas will be essential.
Also consider if you will have the dining room adjacent to the kitchen, or if you will need a staging or buffet area to have food sitting or waiting for guests. This will help when entertaining, and not having to run back and forth to the kitchen.
RDM Architecture Excellent advice, entertaining means different things to different people.
This kitchen in particular was designed specifically to allow for multiple experienced cooks to use it at once. To that end the cooktop was placed such that it could be accessed from both sides. In this case it drove the design however I think most kitchens are used by multiple people at one time so it is certainly work thinking about.
like the kitchen. Like the microwave in the island (below), and a cooktop. actually prefer the cooktop not in the island. I do like the off-white cabinets, but not the multi-colored cabinets, unless the cabinets were white, and the island black. like the counter tops too.
different island
Jeff: I like the corner sink -- access from two directions might be helpful in a tight corner. Dishwasher could be at one corner, sink at another. I like the U-shape. We could have this in our kitchen, with the cut-out for access to stovetop.
