Tile - Hi,
Can you tell me where you got the tile? I also would like to know if the tub is a special tub made to be semi built in or if you used a regular clawfoot or pedestal tub. »
pepperlola The tile is from Mosaic House in NYC per Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Magazine that this was published in. It is a handcut, Moroccan mosaic tile called Tanger C.
Austin Patterson Disston Architects Yes, the tile is from Mosaic House through Greenwich Tile in Connecticut.. The bathtub is cast iron made specifically for a built in. It is Luxor from Aston Matthews in London.
tub design - I fell in love with this tub application but have been discouraged by my contractor. He is concerned about condensation on the belly of the cast iron tub and the potential for water to seep into the box framing. Have there been any leaking or moisture concerns with this design? »
Austin Patterson Disston Architects This is a cast iron Luxor tub and there have been no problems with it. This stunning project is on the water here in Connecticut. A good contractor should certainly be able to work with your designs.
Advantage Contracting You should not have any issues with condensation. If you are concerned, I would air seal all of the framing by caulking the base plates of the walls, spray foam the exterior wall around the tub with 3" thick closed cell spray foam and 1" thick at the two side walls below the tub deck, and use Schluter/Ditra panels across the face of the tub supported by wood blocking under the tub deck. The spray foam and caulking below the tub deck will prevent air infiltration and condensation. The Schluter/Ditra systems will provide you with an uncoupling/anti-fracture membrane to prevent any cracks in the tile and it can be scribed more easily to the curved front of the tub. Most good tile installers know how to use this system. Best of luck! Jarrett
Tub - I looked up the tub but it does not have a version to build in. Do you just make a base and create this look using the clawfoot Luxor sans the feet? Could this be done with any standard clawfoot tub? (the Luxor is an inch to high for me) »
I like the built in tub. It's unusual without taking away from the classic feel a clawfoot tub gives you. The tile doesn't feel dated somehow, which is also a bonus.
