pergola post footing depth in planter? - hello, I was wondering how deep your footing in the planter for pergola post? Also, does you planter have a footing or is it
a stacked retaining wall? THANKS »
Switzer's Nursery & Landscaping, Inc. Thanks for the question.... frost can easily reach 42" in Minnesota. We install 48" footings under all of pergolas. In the case where a pergola footing is installed in a raised bed or planter the 48" is installed at ground level plus the depth of the bed. In the image above the raised planter is about 20" making the total footing in the planter about 70" deep.... welcome to Minnesota.
Would like this on the side of the current patio facing the 11th T. It would afford some protection from bad golfers' balls and provide planters for shade lovign plants.
The L-Shaped Pergola makes this outdoor living room really work. The room's virtual ceiling is defined by the horizontal plane of the pergola. The raised planter assist the posts of the pergola in creating the wall feeling of the outdoor room.
This is what I like. Have it go all the way to the fence, creating a natural barrier in case we ever take down the fence. All, it would ensure we have color in the view out the kitchen. Just need a nice overhang that is waterproof.

The raised planter is constructed of retaining wall block. A standard crushed stone base was installed.
Thank you for the question and best wishes! ~ Glenn!
