You would just have to be very, very, VERY careful. The only thing I can think of is if they are perhaps slip covered and could be removed for dry cleaning. I am sure there is some kind of cleaning instruction that comes with the chairs.

People sit on upholstered dining chairs every day without concerns for spills or staining.
If your dining experience really creates that big of a mess, perhaps a wooden chair would be more appropriate.

scotchgaurd is always on option...but if you want a less expensive option these chairs are reproduced, you can find them on internet. ive seen them on several, one that comes to mind is interior tradefurniture.com.
