M Woodruff Design, LLC Hi Jane,
I wish I knew the answer to your question. This kitchen was a collaborative effort and I'm afraid I can't take credit for the beautiful furnishings as my role was to design the cabinetry. Here is a link to the website for the interior designer, Kimberly Eastburn: http://www.kaeinteriors.com I hope this helps!
What is the design rule for spacing between island seating and the dining table? We have 48" between the two surfaces and are worried about adequate room for chairs and room to walk between them into the kitchen. Any idea how much room is in photo?
Thanks! »
M Woodruff Design, LLC That is a great question and certainly a valid concern. The National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) has standards for just about everything, but of course nothing specific on this particular matter. In my opinion, a lot has to do with the size of your space and the scale of your furniture. Also, is it likely that you will have people seated in both areas at the same time? If so, a comfortable distance from the edge of the counter or bar top to the edge of a table would be 60”. If you have a very large space with room to spare and larger scale furniture then it would be ideal to bump that distance up to 72”. You may be able to get away with 48” if you have smaller scale furniture and don’t intend to use both areas at the same time, but it will be a bit tight (see attached rendering).
Good luck!

jbincoto Very helpful! Thanks so much for the rendering. We are going to scale down our furniture if possible (low profile barstools, possibly a bench seat for the dining table.) We are also going to make the granite have a 15" overhang rather than an 18" overhang as planned. We bumped out the wall 9 feet and almost doubled the kitchen, but the nook area still backs up against the kitchen island.
Thank you!
Rebekah Zaveloff | KitchenLab The floor looks like French quartered limestone. A few links below - looks most like the Carmel color. Not sure about the countertops...though the ones on the range wall look a lot like Nova Blue Limestone or what's also called Lagos Azul some places.
what is the distance needed for swivel bar stools between bar and wall - We want to build in a bar in such a way that on one side the bar stools will back up to a wall. We're unsure if we have enough room.

Large, open kitchens can feel stark — especially if the cabinets are white. To remedy this, one trick is to use vivid accent colors. Red is great color to use in the kitchen. It's a lively, energetic color that will create an inviting space.
