baby tears ok to replace entire lawn? sturdy enough for dogs running?

That's a toughy.. If you'd said "dog" rather than the plural, and a dog very tender footed, gentle on things, who gets the syntax of conversation, I'd said "maybe." But I'd not recommend it as a total lawn replacement, no. In the shade it's leggier, grows taller, is more apt to showing holes from dogginess. In the sun, it tends to grow closer to the ground and is pretty tenacious and invasive. But it's also spotty in the sun, wants more water. I'd call it a ground cover than can take minimal foot traffic.. or paw traffic. If you decide to do it anyway, don't let the dogs on it til' it's had a chance to fill in and get tougher, otherwise, it won't last long enough to get its bearings.. good luck.

I don't know where you are..
you could walk or drive around keeping an eye out for houses that look like they've had work done to your liking - or call your local lumber yard and ask for a recommendation for a couple nice and good contractors. If they have websites, make sure to look carefully at their work. If you live in the Bay Area, you might try Angie's List - good luck

So love this!! - Can you please tell me what are some of the small trees and shrubs, they must be able to grow in low light I presume? I would even appreciate a bit of a planting suggestion. I am in Western Australia and I think that the climate here is similar to CA thankyou

Thanks! Glad you like it.. We love many Australian plants. Tree on left is Cornus florida 'Welchii' (Tricolor Dogwood) - Below it is Daphne odora 'Marginata' (Variegated Winter-blooming Daphne) - strappy plant on lower right side is Liriope gigantea (Giant Lily Turf) - just in front of the granite lantern and across from it is a Fucshia thymifolia (thyme leaf Fuchsia) - at base of lantern is Lamium maculatum (Spotted Nettle) - Red leaves just at upper right of pic is an Acer palmaturm 'Bloodgood' ( Bloodgood Japanese Maple) - multi trunk small tree in front of fence is a Camelia sasanqua of some sort and below that is a Pieris japonica 'variegata' (Variegated Lily-of-the-Valley) - further down the path is an Acer japonicum 'Aureum' (Golden Full Moon Maple), kind of hard to see..
There are also various ferns and geraniums, a bamboo, Pittosporum tobira, but unreadable at this distance. Most of these plants, if they're available, should work where you are, if they get consistent water.. buena fortuna

Wow thankyou sooo much. We live about 2 meters from a lake and the water table is only half a meter down apparently so I think water will be fine. Our space is a little narrower but i will certainly be looking up a those plants. Have been looking at bamboos a lot lately. Could take us a while as we are renovating house as well. Ill post some pictues one day when we get to it. Thanks again. Bless you

Hi. If I recall, we got this from Stone Forest (stoneforest.com) - a very long time ago. If you live in the SF Bay Area, there are many places to find pieces similar to this, should this one not be available anymore. Zentner's in Emeryville, Omega in Berkeley, American Soil in Richmond, Aw Pottery Oakland, Pottery and Beyond Emeryville. good luck!

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Decide on the type of garden you want. Some Japanese gardens are designed as strolling gardens. The stone pathway twists a bit as it follows the fence line. Surrounded by a low ground cover that resembles moss, an often-used ground cover itself, the path disappears at the end of the yard. You may know, intellectually, that it just goes to the fence, but it appears to continue to a distant destination. Boulders and mixed plantings line the path in a causal and irregular mix that creates a sense of balance while still providing movement through the space. Though most of the elements are taken straight out of nature, the dark stone lantern hints at a human presence.
And now for something completely different. My first impression of this garden is that it's intimate and romantic. Why? It’s not the specific plants the designer chose but the way they overhang the path and encroach from the sides. There’s just enough space to pass, and the rest is populated with a luxurious, verdant canopy and finely textured ground covers. Although the massing of plants is more or less balanced on each side of the path, the sinuous nature of the stepping stones creates an organic flow, in some cases obscuring the destination. How would you divide this? I’m comfortable calling it 10 percent space, 90 percent stuff.
Remove lawns where they are hard to maintain. Target narrow side yards, areas around trees and shrubs, and spaces smaller than 12 feet by 12 feet. Mowing, trimming, fertilizing and watering these small, awkward areas are difficult and time-consuming tasks.
