HG Concrete + Steel + Wood Table

This is a custom table I built for our new high-end ultra-premium division, which, for the sake of discussion, we’ll call “HG”.

Over the years I have built many tables. Some have fit their space, many have not. The reason was ergonomics, I would design the piece then demand the space conform. These days the space determines the design constraints with proper ergonomics and clearances taking the lead in the design process.

This particular table went into a residence that needed a dining table for four, with room to squeeze in two more for an impromptu dinner party. The table was to be placed in the kitchen, which lacked prep space. Instead of designing two separate pieces, I handcrafted this table to coalesce. The upper concrete top is a kitchen prep and serving surface, while the lower ash table top is used as the dining table as well as a desk during the day.

What ties this all together is the base, an engineering marvel and a study in minimalism. I was adamant that both surfaces be unified by a singular support structure with four legs. Christian and I welded this piece-by-piece, and had to make design revisions on the fly to stiffen certain sections. The end product is a wabi-sabi modern piece with a nod to mid-century modern icons.

All components of this table were created in-house. Do you have a project that could benefit from our uncommon perspective?
