Cabinets/floors - I love these dark floors! I think I read that you've done many of them. Do you think it's too much to do really dark floors AND dark cabinets? I'm building and can't decide what if this would be too dark for my kitchen. Thanks! »
designs by human. Hi @Skeeley, thank you for the comment and questions! Dark floors and dark cabinets can work and look amazing, but it needs to be done perfectly to not look "dark" or make the room feel very dark and heavy. This can be done with a different types of countertops, wall color and playing with textures. But, just like in a well designed space, everything must coordinate and go with one another. I hope this helps! -Joe
aganovl Thank you for your helpful answer. As I said earlier, it is amazing that this kitchen is IKEA, and yet looks so luxurious. Do you remember how much the total cost was (approximately?). I live in San Diego and met with one of the designers who said that the average cost of the kitchen is > $50.000. After seeing what amazing job you did, I think IKEA is going to be the way to go! Thanks a lot.
designs by human. Hi @aganovl, thank you for the response. Yes, I have found that the typical kitchen overhall is about $50,000 as well. More or less depending on what exactly you are doing and the part of the country you are in but that is a good average. I believe this project came in around to $40,000, but we also included powder room in that cost.
I am a big fan of IKEA, they do have some great products (and some that are also extremely cheaply made). They have a good set of products that can be customized. This kitchen we purchased the cabinets and a few other furniture items from IKEA, the rest was sourced to make it feel more upscale. Please feel free to email me at designsbyhuman@gmail.com if you have any other questions, thanks!
Need help with my kitchen floor plan - Hello, would you be able to share the kitchen measurements including the space between counters and island? I have a similar floor plan and would like to know if I have space for the same amount of cabinets and appliances. Width & Height of refrigerator would be also be very helpful. Any info you can share will be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you! »
designs by human. Hi @Shirley Morgan, This was definitely a discussion topic the homeowners and I had during the design phase. If you notice that most of the doors and drawers are different sizes making it impossible to run everything vertical or everything horizontal. The main reason we decided to do what we did was the natural feeling of opening and closing the cabinet, where would you expect them to be. By having them all the same orientation didn't feel natural on a lot of the cabinets. I hope this helps, please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions, thanks!
May I please use this photo in a blog post? - I'd give you photo credit and include a link back to this page (or any other page you'd prefer I link to instead) »
skh12 I just had Ikea (Adel white) kitchen installed. Want to use Ceasarstone Misty carrera for counter...but not sure of the color compatibility. South facing kitchen - lots of light. Would you please help with Ceasarstone color suggestions? Want light counter color. Using warm and cool white mix subway tile backsplash. Thank you!
designs by human. Indeed! If you can post a couple pictures I can better assist you. Feel free to email me at designsbyhuman@gmail.com with pictures and/or questions. Thanks for the inquiry!
designs by human. You can check out IKEA, I noticed they have a few of the appliances with those coordinating handles and they are fairly reasonable on price. They are made by Whirlpool so you may also check online or your local re-seller to see if they can special order a specific handle. Good luck with the kitchen!
I love this look and I am looking to do something similar in my kitchen but am concerned about doing a white backsplash against these ikea cabinets which I believe are not a pure white. I think they are more of an off white. Any suggestions and/or do you think it would be a problem? »
Meryl Weissman Thanks. Glad to hear they are durable. We were looking at our budget and estimates for labor last night and think we will need to go down the ikea route and was pleased to see how nice this kitchen looked.
designs by human. Thanks for the comments; I do believe the IKEA product in this regard is quite good. I have done several kitchens (see another project with this cabinet
) and they all turn out good. I do recommend paying someone to actually build and install the cabinets unless you are handy. In most cases they are easy to do, but somewhat difficult to get perfectly square unless you have all the right tools and knowhow. Expect to pay about $35 to $50 per cabinet box as an estimate. Hope this helps!
designs by human. Hi Catherine, we are currently based out of Boise, ID but we work nationwide and love to travel. You can look at our website at www.whatisdbh.biz (we are rolling out a new site at the end of the month) for more projects and pictures. Feel free to contact me with any questions, Thanks!
designs by human. Hi @Jorgie, the frames are a brushed aluminum with a frosted glass. I don't recall the IKEA name, they were a part of the Akurum kitchen system though. Let me know if you have any further questions!
designs by human. Ha ha well I do appreciate the comments! We do travel, and are currently looking to do projects in other areas. I'd be willing to work something out if you have a project for us. Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions. Thanks!
designs by human. @ariasrosa7, I have used these types of cabinets in a few applications, both with clean and sterile look and a house full of kids and pets and in both situations they seemed be holding up just fine. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
designs by human. Hi @Soozjohn, the handles are varying sizes depending on the width and height of the cabinet. We bought extra and played with the sizes once the cabinets were installed to get the right look. Let me know if you have any further questions!
pattimay Designs by human, First I have to say... love the name!
You are so helpful and offer so much information; it's nice to see.
I love the after picture, it is just beautiful! What is the wall on the left made of? And I just love the ceiling light!
We are in the starting phase of building our first home. Yikes - Panic.
I seem to be selecting scary things and I'm not sure what direction to go. I like dark floors but understand there is a lot of maintenance. I like stainless appliances but hear they are a nightmare to care for. I like dark contemporary cabinets but worry it's too much with dark floors. I hate the golds and reds in floors but like the browns and grey tints. And of course, eveything is on a careful budget.
Our reason for building is to get what we want - who knows what that is, but also to make our older lives less complicated, easier and enjoyable. Am I picking things that will only make our lives more work?
We both have health issues and can't be doing the kind of home maintenance we did when we were younger.
Hoping you can give some guidance. Thanking you so much!
designs by human. Hi @Pattimay! Thank you for the lovely comments!
Building a house is quite the undertaking but it is a good way to get what you want with fewer compromises (as compared to renovating an existing space). How far along is the house? With all our projects I tend to take a little more upfront time and get a few things planned out in advance, this way you know what you are getting and what to expect when the product is complete.
I would love to help you out with your project, feel free to email me at designsbyhuman@gmail.com, maybe include a few ideabooks you like or some photos, plans, and a little more information about your house and I can see if I can point you in the right direction. Hope this helps, look forward to hearing from you.
It's important to make sure your bar pulls coordinate with the handles on your appliances. Not only should the colors look good together, but the shapes have to be complementary. Drastically different shapes can give the kitchen a cluttered feel, likely the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.

Floor to ceiling cabinets as in surrounding the fridge in this picture--between the double ovens and fridge. Used for storing appliances---mixer, juicer, etc.---and lesser used pans and baking containers.
