This gravel can be go by many names. I would suggest printing this out (or bringing a digital copy) to your local stone supply yard.

Is this pea gravel? It looks a little darker than I've seen. Is it mixed with anything? Its a beautiful space.

It looks very similar to the gravel in this photo. The designer says it is locally called "Tuscany" or "black and Tan" or "Nursery Crush" http://www.houzz.com/discussions/34585/is-this-pea-gravel-or-DG-

This would be more like a standard pea gravel, but could also be a larger Pami Pebble or Lodi. Your best bet would be to visit your local landscape supplier.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Beth Woodson and Kristy Harvey added this to Formal Parterre Gardens Rule the Landscape
Formal parterre gardens traditionally contained some sort of focal point or central feature around which the rest of the garden was designed. This statue is beautiful and looks to be the focal point of this yard. Fountains or other water features are also fantastic anchors to the garden, and, for extra credit, incorporating an animal form makes them even more authentic.
Create an object of desire. An arbor in the distance shelters a garden bench, but it also serves as a frame to highlight a classical sundial placed at the cross section of two intersecting pathways, transforming a once-unnoticed corner of the garden into a charming focal point.
Marianne Lipanovich added this to Lay of the Landscape: French Garden Style
Use decorative elements. Statues, urns and planters, and water features are all elements of French garden design. The key is restraint. A simple fixture at the end of a gravel path is all you need as a focal point.
Loose materials. Although they might seem like a low-budget cop-out, loose materials like gravel, crushed rock, compacted shale and decomposed granite can be an inexpensive yet elegant choice, especially when edged by a richer material, like stone or brick. Advantages include permeability, low cost and ease of installation. However, these materials are more likely to be displaced, especially if water passes over them. And gritty, sandy materials are the last things you want to track onto your hardwood entryway. One of my favorite design treatments for upgrading crushed rock paths uses enriched thresholds and intersections of stone.
Paintbox Garden added this to Is It Time for a Sundial in Your Garden?
Formal designs benefit from strong focal points, especially when paths are monochromatic, with a limited plant palette. In this San Francisco backyard, boxwood shrubs create low hedging that lets the eye travel to a sundial mounted high on a stone base. This is a very different look; it’s refined, calm, reserved — a place for walking with a book of poetry, perhaps.
