Euphorbia - Plants That Brighten Up The Late Winter Garden

Euphoribas - I love their architectural shape, sometimes alien looking flowers and the vast selection of colors, shapes and sizes available!

Will this grow in zone 5? »

Dig Your Garden Landscape Design Hello Debbie, this particular Euphoriba - characias, may only be hardy to zone 7. There are thousands of Euphorbia species, and some would probably work in your zone 5. I'd check with you local nurseries to determine what may be available and thrive in your area. Good luck!

Euphorbia characias (zones 8 to 11). Add architectural structure and stimulating color to your garden with E. characias. Reaching a height upward of 4 feet, the upright dome of E. characias is one of the largest. Dense, chalky blue foliage brightens the garden year-round, and a vivid crown of chartreuse flowers tops the plant come spring. Grown in full sun, the shrub holds it color well through the season, only needing to be trimmed back once the stalks yellow. E. characias pairs neon colors with cooler hues for a truly modern design juxtaposition.

Various sedums and other succulents also offer blue foliage and stems for the garden. These euphorbias are fabulous design plants because they put out new lime-green growth every spring for a brilliant contrast with the blue-hued stems. Careful, though: Many spurges can irritate the skin (akin to poison ivy) and can be toxic if ingested. Keep the kids away from this one by planting it in the rear section of your garden bed.
