Small kitchen big impact

My clients wished to maintain the character of their 1921 Tudor style home while improving everything about this original kitchen that had already seen one “face lift”. More counter space, better storage and upgraded appliances were all desired for this tiny space (102 square ft). In addition the homeowners wanted a design that was rooted in the past, but not weighted down by heavy traditional elements.

From the start I encouraged the clients to maintain the plaster tray ceiling and hood (the hood was hidden above the refrigerator, they didn’t realize it was there). We selected a transitional door style in a medium cherry finish. This provided the elegant styling the client preferred, while keeping the room visually clean and spare.

I created a mantle detail to lower the height of the hood and connect it to the cabinetry. We also ducted it to the exterior and installed a modern blower. A black glass electric cook top was combined with an under cabinet oven for a sleek, less bulky appearance in this snug room. A spice rack was tucked in to the side of the oven cabinet, no space being wasted.

The Paradiso Classico granite counters were complemented with a hand glazed pale blue tile backsplash. The oak flooring was continued into the kitchen from the rest of the home.

The completed project suits this vintage home and the owners perfectly, preparing it for the next 88 years.
