How difficult & costly is it to add the oval window to a wall where no window exists? - I love the look of this room. It is a classic, yet modern and beachy look...clean & functional space...just great! I espeically love that oval window! I just purchased at house near the beach and would love to add this type of window to my bedroom and / or living room.
QUESTION: how difficult/costly is it to add this kind of window to a wall (or walls)? thanks in advance. »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Difficulty lies in the walls. If the wall is engineered so that it can handle punching a hole through it and adding a the window it could be fairly easy. Call upon a local craftsman that can give you some advice, as you will need some clarification as to what is behind those walls.
Leather sofas - dining room chairs - I have open concept living/dining with medium beige sofas. I have a dark round contemporary dining table and I want to add chairs but don't want black - would white be too stark with the beige »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. The finish is a custom mix to create the ebonized look. We used tongue and groove, nail in place oak planks.
As for your question about dark floor and ceiling in a small space; if you have enough natural light to saturate the space I think you can create some great interest with lighter trim and built-ins. If you don't have much natural light in the space then you'll be creating a much more enveloping space which can read really warm and cozy.
This is a beautiful room. I'm going to paint my husband's office Naval by SW and we have white wainscotting on all of the lower half of the walls so it should pop like this. I'm curious to know what the colors were in the other areas of the house to tie in to this color. I will use Maritime White in the hallway seen from that room and Georgian Green in the dining room to the left of the hallway. I'm going to use 50% Revere Pewter in the kitchen due to the gray veining in my Quartzite (natural stone). It also has very light shade of green when you stare into it so I didn't want the kitchen walls to be green to pull more of it out..I'm stumped as to how many other colors I can put in my main floor. I will paint my living room Maritime White also but have pillows that have the dark blue and green from the office and dining room in a floral..My couches are neutral in the living and family room..basically creams..I still have to pick the color for the powder rooms off the family room that's next to the kitchen and my husband's powder room off the SW naval..There's also a laundry room off of the kitchen..Do I have to paint all these areas Maritime White to keep the flow? Thank you so much! »
Garrison Hullinger Interior Design Inc. Not sure if this question is still relevant...a lot of the flow depends on the breaks in your rooms...if the transitions don't seem to be a natural break I think it can look very segmented when you throw in colors for each room or hallway. But I definitely think you should have the artistic choice to have different colors throughout other rooms.
Drop dead gorgeous contemporary desk looks amazing in this otherwise very traditional room! COuld you, please, identify the resource for the desk? Thanks, Donna Johnson »
While it can be the most inexpensive way to make a table in the world, the high-end market has caught on to the sexy legs of the sawhorse table. They are even more attractive when they are chrome!
If you're really rocking out a renovation, consult with a cabinetmaker to design the best unit for what you need to store. Again, measure the depth of your books and binders so that you can scale them accordingly.
The nautical look with Ralph Lauren's Writer's Chair captures the tranquil elegance of the sea with an artful mix of chic and rustic elements with a strong shade of Ralph Lauren blue.
This room looks like the designer deconstructed a Navy dress uniform and replaced the brass buttons with inspection-ready polished nickel. Instead of using busier navy and white prints, this room makes a big statement with the dark navy wall, a polished sawhorse desk, and a porthole window.
Blue and brown. So, clearly I love how blue combines with other colors, but nothing says "sophisticated preppy chic" like blue and neutrals, like saddle leather brown. It's no surprise that the preppy powerhouse, J. Crew nails the combo. So does Garrison Hullinger. It's no doubt that this sunny room would have been lovely without it, but the tufted leather chair adds dimension and a sense of history. In a white room, even just one accent wall of deep blue does the trick. The chrome (silver-tinted) sawhorse legs bring surprise and class to a simply designed office.
Window coverings Roman blinds always look smart. I often have them made with a mitered border to add definition — try matching the borders with the paint color of your walls. This deep indigo instantly says classic coastal.
A navy accent wall in a very light room adds depth. You don't even have to look out the window to tell that this room is near the water. The color combo and striped window shades tell the whole story.
The stepped-back shelving in the back corner. Have the desk and main shelves be out into the room, and then by the window, have it step back and do narrow shelves.
...... another possible window idea for the marsh side. Such windows may be stronger against winds/storms........... and I can open just a few from the bottom or top for ventilation -------- without worrying too much about rain storms.
