Also by Ehrlich, but far removed stylistically than the previous house, is this Corten-steel clad corner house in Venice, close to the ocean yet urban in its immediate context. Bright orange sails shade the house (and pool between the fence and house) and soften the rust of the steel walls.

An exterior wall articulates the perimeter edge of the property and inside creates Ehrlich's unique, somewhat inside-out take on Moroccan homes that open to hidden courtyards. This wall is composed of Trex, concrete blocks that match the ones used inside the house, and LUMAsite, a translucent combination of fiberglass and acrylic. The next edge is one that transforms; Ehrlich used a dynamic system of sunshades, mounted across the top and down the long street side of the exoskeleton to control temperature, light and privacy.

A fabric awning is one of my favorite architectural elements. These awnings have so many terrific qualities. They are kinetic, so not only can they be raised and lowered but they will move with the wind much like sails do. They add spots of bright, exciting color to any building. And fabric awnings have an impermanent and transient quality that plays nicely against the solidity and stiffness of a building. It's like the awnings are the soft counterbalance to a building's hard structure.
