Shannon Cabinetry The space in front can be any size. Keep in mind whatever is on the counter is in the way of opening doors and drawers. In another photo of my pictures you will see a hutch with just 1 1/2 " of counter in front. This cabinet is a pantry and will be accessed more often, so counter space in front of a pantry hutch would be of no use. Also the extra depth was needed in the pantry hutch.

Shannon Cabinetry cabinet on the left is 13" cabinet on the right is 26" the 3 doors are the same width and height. They match the cabinets on the other side of the pass through. The height of the cabinets are 59" from the counter to the top.
