Maintain weird family traditions. While we’re on the topic, I’ll tell you about our unusual Thanksgiving activities. We have a $15-and-under gift exchange. Back when this tradition started 35 years ago, the limit was $3, but it’s gone up with inflation. It’s a fun way to think about someone you don’t usually buy gifts for, like your second cousin once removed. My dad writes up a newsletter with family milestones and goofy pictures of various members, and then my mom draws names out of a hat to create the gift exchange. Then it is sent out not only to the attendees but also to all those invited who can’t make it because they have some excuse like being a Navy jet pilot stationed in Japan and are busy providing relief to the Philippines from the aircraft carrier. Not that unusual, you say? Well, the kicker is that my uncle Steve dresses up like Santa and recites his own original and hilarious poems while passing out gifts during all of this. It’s complicated. And funny as all get-out.
