Would you please advise what the baseboards are made of? - I notice the baseboard surrounding the island is of the same material as the flooring, but wondering about the rest? I'm having marble flooring in my kitchen, laid in the same fashion as in this kitchen and have been given the option of using the same material for the baseboards. Most kitchens I've looked at seem to have wooden or MDF baseboards... what would you suggest? Your kitchen design is beautiful, by the way. »
Habitat Studio & Workshop We don't recommend MDF anywhere in a ktichen, just because if it gets wet and is not completely sealed it will swell. That being said, using tile as the baseboard is a nice look, but I find it can be a bit overbearing if used everywhere. That is why you will find in the picture above that we have a mixture of the tile and wooden baseboard. Hope that helps!
giannaleone I do agree, it can look overbearing. Much of the kitchen space will be taken up by the cabinets (in a u-shape), large folding sliding doors to the patio (similar to those in the above photo), and a wide, beamed doorway to the living room... shouldn't be too much baseboard on display, after all. Thanks so much for replying! I really appreciate it!
As for the grout look...the tile guy uses a tool which clips the tiles together and keeps the grout lines perfect and also helps to level one to another. I'm not sure what the tool is called sorry. The tiles were installed by RiverCity Tile http://www.rivercitytile.ca/
Habitat Studio & Workshop Hi there,
Unfortunately the green colour is not paint...it is actually custom silk wallpaper. The material was imported from India. Sorry! I know that probably does not really help you! You can see it a bit better in this picture:
Cynthia Taylor-Luce Wow, it looks like a completely different colour in this photo! It's very striking. I actually personally prefer this blue-green to the very yellow-green in the first photo.
How does one arrange to have this bar installed in their home? - I need a contemporary bar of eight to ten feet long installed in my condominium in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Who does the work? »
Habitat Studio & Workshop Hi...the material is 3-form CHROMA II, 1” thick, color “Pool”. (http://www.3-form.com/materials/chroma/) and it was fabricated and installed by Milltech Millwork Ltd. This is in Edmonton, Canada, so I am unsure of who can install it in Florida, however you can probably get the 3-form material down there!
mybar4397 Hi Trevor...Thank you. I found a sales rep. in Tampa, Fl. close to where I live. I checked out their website and I'm blown away. Please tell me anything else you know about how to have a contemporary bar built for my home. Have a good holiday if you're in the U.S.
Were the doors and windows custom-made? - I love the windows in the sunroom and the folding doors to the space. Were they Edmonton-made or from a wider scale manufacturer?
Also, is the sunroom a 3- or 4-season space? (Curious Canadians love knowing this stuff - especially with -40C a reality in winter).
Many thanks for your time! »
Mint Design Radiant heat is available for both wood and stone or tile. There are several types but the circulating hot water system works the best in a cold climate. And yes, great for allergies and dust! No more cold feet! Yay!
bennycatgirl Thank you both! I spent some very pleasant time on both the Jeldwen and Nanawall websites last night and now have lots more to think/dream about. :D
I'll need to do more research on the radiant heat flooring - though the warm feet idea is a strong argument for 'em! Would the circulating hot water system work in a retrofit as well as new build? Does one still need a traditional furnace system as backup?
The clients wanted a generous-size kitchen built for entertainment and one that could accommodate two cooks with ease. A walk-in pantry just past the main kitchen space provides plenty of storage, while the cabinets were specifically designed for the clients' needs. A transparent eating bar is made out of acrylic for easy cleanup, and a butcher block island countertop eliminates the need for cutting boards. Counters: Labradorite Blue Austral granite; flooring: Augusto travertine; cabinetry: custom cherry, Zebra Cabinets
Habitat Studio & Workshop The colour is actually called Augusto (http://www.juliantile.com/travertine_imperiale.html).

A less rustic travertine look.
