The Natural LookThis home has a simple natural and soothing look. The antique armchair was reupholstered in a soft linen, and the pillows are all made from fabric that the homeowner has collected over the years. The unique coffee table is an African drum, and the little cupboard in the fireplace was an old Indian refrigerator. When you're flea market friendly, it's worthwhile to rethink the way you'd normally use an object. Tip: Sometimes older pieces just aren't practical. This homeowner wanted the look of older cupboards but knew that they'd be too small to hold what she needed. Instead, new cabinets were outfitted with older doors for a similar look. Try combining old and new to get the look and functionality you need.

Not a fan of modern? Try an English roll-arm style. This classic shape is superbly comfortable for curling up in and grounds any room you put it in. Look for a chair that feels really heavy, which is a sign of quality construction. Turned wood legs, a kiln-dried hardwood frame and welting or piping where the upholstery meets the legs are other hallmarks to look for.

4. Ask questions. See something similar to what you want, but not exactly? Query the dealer. Chances are, he or she has it back at the house, shop or storage facility and will offer to bring it to the market next week. How’s that for service? Likewise, aim to learn about a piece’s provenance or where the dealer found it; a story always adds to an item's allure. Ninety percent of the fun to be had at market is hearing all the stories — I could do it all day long. (This will also help you hone your flea market eye and aid you in building dealer rapport, both crucial in the fine art of number five.)

Design finds: Oversize mirrors and artwork, chippy chairs and case goods, capiz shells and vintage musical instruments.Try this at home: Add a sense of history by allowing the rough edges and chipping paint of your vintage finds to show through. Have fun treasure hunting at antiques fairs and junk shops alike, and once you get home, challenge yourself to put your finds to work in an unexpected way.

While modern homeowners often prefer open plan living, there is a lot to be said for separate rooms for separate activities. This lovely room has the proportions of a modest Victorian drawing room and is being used as a sitting room. Modern, pale, neutral colors and a large light-reflecting mirror promote a feeling of space.
