Got rid of all the grass, installed some drought tolerant plants, added a water feature and created a raised dining terrace with privacy screens in an otherwise exposed back yard.
Genus Loci Ecological Landscapes Inc. There was the original 1x6 pressure treated fence, which we left in place. We then installed the smaller cedar fence around the dining deck. It is built of 1x6 cedar, ripped in half to create narrower slats. Hope this helps.
Genus Loci Ecological Landscapes Inc. The photo is decieving... the mulch between the slabs was temporary, until the lawn seed germinated... once the grass is in, weeds won't have much of a chance.
Genus Loci Ecological Landscapes Inc. Actually, the mulch around the pavers was intended stictly as a temporary measure until we could get some grass established around the pavers. So, I suppose this could be dog-friendly once the turf is established. I wouldn't do pebbles, as these would be kicked up onto the stones, and would become an on-going maintenance issue.
EasyTurf If you're looking for dog-friendly turf, EasyTurf may be your answer. Presently FieldTurf leads the artificial grass industry in manufacturing excellence and product innovation. EasyTurf, the landscape arm of FieldTurf, supplies turf to commercial and residential clients throughout North America.
The main differentiation in EasyTurf products is the MaxxFlow backing, a proprietary 100% permeable backing that drains faster and cleaner than any other turf backing, standing toe to toe with the best permeable paver technology. (video here www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPiptLLbaqs)
Other artificial grass brands either have holes punched into the back for drainage or have to come to complete saturation before draining, absorbing bacteria, allergens, urine and other materials before draining.
Feel free to check out the differences for yourself at EasyTurf.com and FieldTurf.com - as a point of reference FieldTurf leads the modern day sports field industry. 21 of 32 NFL teams play or practice on FieldTurf products.
Here's a photo of a recent install with paver stones.
Genus Loci Ecological Landscapes Inc. Well, it could get a bit messy if the dog likes to dig and scramble around. The slabs will support the dog's weight no problem, its really more around how much maintenance you are prepared to do to keep everything looking clean and tidy... not sure I can be more helpful than this...
Follow up to the present - I'd love to do something like this in my small Bay Area backyard. Would you happen to have photos of the final product when the grass grew around the slabs? I'm sure the look and feeling is very different. Love the style! »
