JAMES DEWULF – CREATING HIP AND
FUNCTIONAL ART WITH CONCRETE

A CONCRETE PING PONG TABLE FOR THE DINING ROOM
In 2004 James DeWulf established DeWulf Concrete, a small design operation creating avant-garde, concrete-couture for architects, interior decorators, commercial retail stores, and residential clients. Recognized for his innovative work with custom concrete design, DeWulf quickly became known for his ability to fuse the most advanced concrete technology with beautiful, modern, and natural forms to create functional art.
In addition to his custom work, DeWulf’s cutting-edge styles have grown into a full-scale product line available at exclusive retail stores. With a broad range of sinks, tables, fireplaces, outdoor pieces, and countertops, his products have captured the attention of the design industry. LA Confidential magazine raved, “DeWulf is a renegade in the world of kitchen design, and his raw scrappiness comes through in his bold countertops and sinks.” Distinction magazine stated that, “James DeWulf is raising the bar on concrete design both visually and ecologically with his handmade furnishings.” In addition, James has been featured on HGTV and the BBC, and his garden pieces were included in the House Beautiful Magazine Celebrity Showhouse in Los Angeles. More recently James and his pieces have been featured in Forbes Life, California Home + Design, Interior Design, and more.
His latest success, a concrete Ping Pong Dining Table, created quite a sensation when introduced at ICFF last year. It has attracted international attention and represented a major achievement for James and his shop. With the table James pushed the limits of compounding and production procedures to create an ultra-thin, extremely strong, and flat surface. The design is an exercise in proportion using numbers in the Fibonacci sequence, as the top is 1" thick, while the legs are 3" thick and 8" wide. The table is fun to play on; and a terrific conversation piece. You can bang into it, play beer pong on it, leave it out in the snow and even stand on it. It also works nicely as a dining table.
Dewulf’s clients include; Oprah, Tom Ford, James Spader, Tyrell Owens, Randolph Duke, Charlize Theron, Christian Audigier, Andre Agassi and Stephanie Graf, and several other celebrities. His projects are diverse, ranging from Los Angeles nightclubs and boutique hotels, to architect-driven spaces such as the Malibu Tin House designed by Frank Gehry, and a unique New York home decorated by Albert Hadley. More than anything, it is DeWulf’s passion for concrete and the many creative things he can do with it that drives him to push the envelope of concrete design and fabrication. “There’s something alive about concrete”, says DeWulf. “You can’t help rub your fingers over it”.
