maryapodjun This is an old post, but I immediately thought of pea rock/gravel for your path. It's not totally without cost, but a little goes a long way. The natural colors in the gravel look good with perennials and grasses.

Maria Hickey & Associates Landscapes We used irregular cut bluestone to create this timeless look. Only a few hundred dollars for the stones....they are mortarted in place. In your particular situation, I would recommend crushes seashells. Another thought is stepping stones with steppables planted between them.

Betty Guchu Any chance of getting a list of the plants? I just love the look and if I don't have to worry about watering then all the better!
Johanna Wise_Segatti I would be so grateful to know what the drought resistant plants are as well. . .I see some kind of lillies- I had some last year that I didnt water and they died. What kind are these? And wht are the pink flowers on the lower right and lower left in front? And the purple ones in back? and some of the filler green?

What Houzz contributors are saying:
added by Marianne Lipanovich to Lay of the Landscape: Cottage Garden Style
Start with the layout. Traditionally, the main path would lead directly to the front door, with plants billowing over on each side. That's still appropriate, but you could also create a winding path that leads you on a tour through the garden.
added by Beth Woodson and Kristy Harvey to Walkway Landscaping Rolls Out the Welcome Mat
A burst of color can be so welcoming on a front walk. Bright flowers can accessorize a monochromatic home exterior.
added by LuAnn Brandsen to Pathway Plantings That Please the Senses
4. Fragrance giversAdd another dimension to a garden path with aromatic flowers. Visitors will love brushing up against tobacco flower, old-fashioned petunias, lavender, spicy dianthus and heliotrope with its vanilla or cherry pie scent.
added by J. Peterson Garden Design to Texas Gardener's September Checklist
Plant perennials. Fall is a wonderful time for planting perennials, and virtually any perennial that is suitable for growing in zones 7 or 8 is a good choice. Consider adding Mexican mint marigold (Tagetes lucida), Mexican bush sage (Salvia leucantha), purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), yellowbells (Tecoma stans) and autumn sage (Salvia gregii). Planting perennials in the fall gives them the cooler months to establish deep, healthy roots, so your spring growth will be much larger and robust.
The flair of cottage garden planting. Planting schemes moved away from Victorian restrictions and turned to a more naturalistic or cottage garden style. These plantings related to the site and soil conditions, the local identity and how the plants grew naturally.Plants were grown in drifts and allowed to spill over paths and edging, with little obvious control. This look is the image most people have of a traditional English country garden.
This might be a good garden to wrap up this design lesson with. It might sound obvious, but assuming you have at least average gardening skills, your plants will grow larger than they were the day you installed them. Unlike interior design, in which your coffee table more or less remains the size it was when you brought it home, your plants will keep changing. That means your stuff and space percentages will evolve over time. That’s not a good thing or a bad thing, but it’s worth thinking ahead when you decide how many plants to buy and how to space them. This giddy garden appears to be devouring the path. Everywhere you look flowers are bumping up against their neighbors, like a mosh pit of perennials. It’s charming and well suited to the style of house and, I assume, suits the owner’s sense of style. The point is, if your goal is to maintain a certain balance of space and mass, pay attention to the mature size of each plant you select, allowing adequate space to achieve the size nature intended.Lay of the Landscape: Find your garden style
8. Assess conditions. What kind of light do you have? Whether your yard is mostly in the sun or in the shade, you'll need to plant accordingly. This can be a disappointment for new gardeners, who might have visions of peonies and roses and lilacs dancing in their heads. It can be disappointing to consider plants that can handle less sun; it certainly was for me.

The color mix is delightful and I love the feminine quality. The use of varied height, color and texture against the white backdrop of the home creates a wonderful, charming pathway. It makes one want to grab their easel and paints and capture this scene - what a lovely vision...

It is typically English and I would love to plant a garden that reminded me of home in England. It creates interest and is great for cutting and giving to friends who come to visit or before you go to a friends home. One can place ornamentation around corners and little seats to sit quietly and take it all in. And, the bonus.. not a lot of lawn to cut.
