Potting bench. Who's to say that planting needs to stop once the ground freezes? Indoor potting benches are the perfect place to carry on with your green-thumb hobbies throughout the fall and winter and also duplicates as a great place to paint. I have a potting bench indoors, and it is my go-to desk for any project that's messy.Tip: If you're bringing in your outdoor bench, go over the potting bench with a wire brush to remove dirt and inspect the corners for spider nests. Use white vinegar diluted with water and spray it over the entire surface. Let soak for a little bit and then rinse with a hose. Pat dry and bring inside only when dried completely.

If plumbing doesn't allow for a sink, just find a cozy corner of a back porch, hall or mudroom and set up a potting bench with a few of the supplies you'll need. Don't forget a few pegs for those gardening hats.

Smaller furniture pieces, such as the table, chair and bench seen here, are often seen in the trash pile. Be brave and rescue pieces from the curb before they end up in the dump. Mismatched furnishings work nicely when the finishes are similiar. In this photo, the pieces all have a similiar worn, grayish patina. If you find disparate pieces, give them a coat of paint to make the grouping look more intentional.
