David Ludwig - Architect Pergolas usually have 2-3 layers of structure. The first, or lowest layer is usually the primary structure and needs to attach for strength and run at 90 degrees from the face of the building. The second layer is often medium sized members running parallel to the face of the building about 2 feet apart. You can create a larger space right next to the building with this layer, say 3 feet. The third layer is smaller pieces usually 12" apart and if you leave a 18" gap between this layer and the building, you can allow the light to sneak past the main pergola shade. Work with your builder and have him create mock-ups of each layer for your approval before everything is secured into place. The pergola pictured here is only 2 layers. Not my favorite as the large structural beam blocks the view when looking out.
how to determine what color of paver to complement your home - I have a white (vinyl) traditional farm house. Wrap porch. Dark green shingles and dark green shutters. We are wanting to add stone and pavers to landscaping. What would you suggest? Thank you. Fabulous design »
Shingle color - Can you tell me what shingle style and color/stain you used on this home? As well as the shutter color if you have it. Thank you so much! Beautiful work! »
