Those are formed and poured in place. Sometimes we dig small piers under each step for added stability.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Plant choice and maintenance are vital where steps and pathways need to be well lit and kept completely clear of trip and slip hazards, especially for people with restricted sight and mobility. Generally, plants should be creepers or low growing and carefully selected for the width of the step’s tread. Be sure to keep this in mind before planting your steps.Poured-in-place-concrete steps interplanted with Santa Barbara daisy (Erigeron karvinskianus, USDA zones 6 to 9; find your zone), blue fescue (Festuca glauca, zones 4 to 8), creeping thyme (Thymus praecox) and Berkeley sedge (Carex divulsa, zones 4 to 10) lead to this California front yard.

This is in Marin. Flowers: “There are flowering Penstemon, Santa Barbara Daisy, Blue Fescue and Creeping Thyme, along with Berkeley sedge and Dietes bicolor.” I love these steps - I love your work on Houzz, and especially these steps! I'm dying to know how you stabalized these. Did you guys pour these with molds then set on road base or something? Or did you drive some rebar or something into the ground and then pour in place? Would love to know your secret if it is not too big of a secret as I was planning on trying something similar.... Huettl Landscape Architecture Those are formed and poured in place. Sometimes we dig small piers under each step for added stability.
