Where can I find a section drawing of the planter that shows the drainage system? - The only sunny spot on our property here in SE Wisconsin is the top of our boat house. It has a concrete slab top, so I'd like to have a vegetable garden using planters like these. How shall I plan for water drainage? It's also a great spot because (I think) I can keep the deer and rabbits out by having a gate at the top of the stairs that lead to it. »
Patrick Leonetti I am building something similar but using corrugated metal on for the sides. I plan to use straw bales to fill the bottom for drainage and then add the topsoil. That way I do not have to get so much extra dirt.
How do you care for the planters? - Currently I have new cedar planters. I did not fill them with soil this year because I had already started plants in pots. I want to make sure the cedar planters can withstand the New England winters, so do I fill them with soil or keep the plants in pots? »
Conte & Conte, LLC We used a filter fabric on the inside with a plastic vapor barrier. We made sure to only stain the outside of the wood so the chemicals wouldn't seep inside the soil. Besides this, these planters require little maintenance and you can fill them with soil now if you wish. Hope this helps and let us know if you have any other questions!
Conte & Conte, LLC Unfortunately we didn't select the color of the house, but you may want to check out Silver Sateen by Behr, I believe it is fairly similar.
Stain Color and How to attach railing? - I am currently trying to replicate these exact beds, I have my wood cut to length and finished. Do you know what color stain was used, I really like the color and would like to get the same color if possible. Also, how are the rails fastened to the bed? Thanks! »
Edible garden. Raised beds lend order and structure to a kitchen garden. Depending on the dimensions, they also can be kid and grandparent friendly. For example, this set of eight raised beds, beautifully constructed from ipe or similar hardwood lumber, has details like mitered corners and smooth hardware, making them suitable for youngsters who want to stand at the edge and harvest carrots or radishes to their hearts' content. And the capped walls are wide enough to double as seating — handy for someone with physical limitations.Mostly I admire this side kitchen garden for its attractive design, functional spacing (there's room for a wheelbarrow between the raised beds) and the excellent proportions that hold their own with the scale of the home.See how to make a raised garden bed
