Kitchen Renovation to Historic House

Built about 1906, the stately home had been added onto numerous times during the last century, resulting in a jumble of back porches facing a beautiful garden and a cramped, dark kitchen tucked deep in the house.

By incorporating two of the porches into the expanded footprint of the kitchen, space and a spectacular view of the garden were easily had. Floor-to-ceiling double-hung windows fill the open space between columns maximizing light and air for the kitchen while maintaining the scale and character of the original porches.

Then there was the interior . . .

A modernist at heart, the owner wanted a bright, streamlined kitchen that is more than a place to cook. Because its functional components become “background” to the space and the views, it’s also a study, a breakfast room, a TV room, a garden solarium, an ideal reading nook for one, or a table for eight lucky diners in the chef’s kitchen.
