Harlem Residence Master Bath contemporary bathroom

Harlem Residence Master Bath

A cookie cutter developer three bedroom duplex was transformed into a four bedroom family friendly home complete with fine details and custom millwork. A home office, artist studio and even a full laundry room were added through a better use of space. Additionally, transoms were added to improve light and air circulation.

All of the shower controls are from Hansgrohe. They have a great system where all the roughs (the parts inside the wall) are the same and you can install whichever trim you'd like (and can even change the trims in the future). The mirror is custom but you come up with a similar design by installing a partially recessed medicine cabinet and building your own frame around the outside. This one is out of Douglas Fir. Hope this helps.

The tile is from the Stone Source Glacier line. We used an off-white but I'd suggest getting a bunch of samples in both clear and satin to look at in person. The colors vary quite a bit on websites. One thng to consider with glass tiles is that they can crack pretty easily during installation. We usually order 20% - 25% more than we need to be on the safe side. These are 4"x12" which felt like the right proportion for this size shower. Hope this helps.

Like the tile but the size of the tile quoted here doesn't quite make sense. Would make the shower 12x4 " high which is four feet high?

Yes, there's no shower door in this bathroom. We've found that in some cases a shower door just isn't necessary. It's nice not to have to juggle opening a door with operating the shower controls. By the way, the length of the shower is about 5'-3". Hope this helps.

How does the tile and the glass come together - Hi, great project! The residence has a lot of life and vibrance! Does the glass door actually trim off the tile? Is it caulked to the tile or grouted? Hi, Thanks for the compliment. There's no door to the left of the fixed glass. We actually adhered an extra layer of 1/4" sheetrock to the wall so the finish planes of tile and wall align (grout line between the two). The vertical glass panel is recessed into an aluminum channel set into the wall and the joint between channel and tile is clear silicone. Hope this answers your questions.

The light is the VC100 made by RAB. Stonco makes a similar one called the Roughlyte (Stonco is owned by Phillips). They're actually made for outdoor use and can be installed with or without a guard around them. They're reasonably priced at around $35 each and I just installed a couple on a porch. Hope this helps.

My experience may be skewed because we're in NYC but I'd budget approximately $1500 for 1/2" thick, "Starphire" or "low iron" glass. You could get away with 3/8" thick but the 1/2" is nicer. "Low iron" glass is also more expensive than typical float glass because it goesn't have the slightly green/blue cast that iron content gives to normal glass. A good source for hardware is CR Laurence. Hope this helps.

Thanks. The glass tile is the Glacier line from Stone Source but we've used similar tile from other sources. The floor stone outside the shower is call Baltimore and is also from Stone Source. The stone tile inside the shower is also Baltimore but is in a scarpaletto (scraped) finish. Because it's a small bathroom we were able to install the area outside the shower in a single slab.

This is a tough one and I think the best way to answer it is with lots and lots of samples. We were recently working on a project with a similar design question and our two finalists were Horizon and Marilyn's Dress (both from Benjamin Moore). Of the two, Horizon was less blue and warmer. Good luck!

Adding on to this Glass question. What is typical for a glass length from shower head wall so you dont get splashing outside the shower? I have about a 6.5' wall and was going to do 36" wide shower, just need to know glass depth :)

If you're using a typical wall-mounted shower head, I would feel comfortable with a minimum of 36" of glass. You could also work from the other direction and leave an opening of between 26" and 30". A 30" opening would give you 48" of glass. A 30" opening to walk through would be very comfortable. Best of luck with your project!

Hi. The sink is a Lacava 5061. Although it's similar to the Duravit Vero, it has a wider edge which is nice for setting things. The medicine cabinet is custom and the wood species around the mirror is Douglas Fir.

Hi, the bathroom and shower are the same material but different treatments. It goes by a couple of different names - gray foussana or baltimore. In the bathroom proper it's a single slab of stone in a honed finish. In the shower it's installed as individual tiles with a "scarpaletto" finish for better grip. Hope this helps.

Hi there. No, we haven't had any problems with a long shower arm on this or any other projects. The head is actually pretty light. You could also look into a ceiling mounted shower arm and use the same head. One thing to be aware of is the spacing of any lights in the shower. If you locate a light directly above the head, a chrome finish will reflect onto the ceiling. A little thing... Best of luck.

Depending on the supplier and manufacturer the cost can range from $14 - $30 psf. They're not inexpensive but if used within a space like a shower the overall cost is worth it.

"Low iron" means that the glass has a lower amount of iron in it that typical. It's a clearer glass and has less of a greenish/blue tint. A brand name you might see around is "Starphire". Hope this helps.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

John Whipple - By Any Design ltd. added this to Convert Your Tub Space to a Shower — the Planning Phase
Measure the bathroom exactly. Draw the finished wall measurements, right down to the 1/8 inch. Most tubs are 60 inches wide, and this is a great width for a shower. The depth is the kicker. Aim for at least 32 to 34 inches from the finished tile wall to the future glass shower door. You will also need to to have a finished ceiling height of 80 inches minimum and a shower that's at least 30 by 30 inches to comply with the National Kitchen & Bath Association's guidelines for bathrooms. If you decide to plan for a bench, make sure it doesn't crowd this space of 30 by 30 inches minimum.Record the toilet location. A distance of 15 to 18 inches from the the center of the toilet to the glass on the new shower door tends to be comfortable.

Record the toilet location. A distance of 15 to 18 inches from the the center of the toilet to the glass on the new shower door tends to be comfortable.

If you decide to plan for a bench, make sure it doesn't crowd this space of 30 by 30 inches minimum. Record the toilet location. A distance of 15 to 18 inches from the the center of the toilet to the glass on the new shower door tends to be comfortable.
