railings and steps - how do you achieve that dark glossy, luster finish on the railing and steps? do you use stain or paint? what color stain and what color paint? how many coats applied? »
Clawson Architects, LLC 3 coats. Stain on railings would be finished with minwax oil based polyurethane in semi gloss. Floors are finished with Absco in satin. Floors are white quartersawn oak, stained 50 percent Jocobean and 50 percent Ebony mix. Same on railings- if too light make them a little more ebony mixed in.
Can you please tell me what height you hung the large chandelier? - Are those 9 ft ceilings on both floors? Can you also tell me the size of the chandelier? »
elllsworth11 This is the homeowner: The posting above refers to Circa lighting which iis a good source, but this lantern over the stairs is actually from Currey and Company lighting. It is the Grayson lantern, large size. I might have changed the finish to a a slightly darker color (slight upcharge) like old iron or dark bronze, but I'm not sure, or it might be ok left as is in French Black. The glass is beautiful on it.
elllsworth11 This is ellsworth- It is really not a matter of coats. 50 percent minwax jacobean mixed with 50 percent ebony. Follow the minwax staining instructions. Our floor person said the only advice would be to wet the floors first maybe to soak the color in. Try with a wood sample that is the same as your floors. You can get a wood sample at a lumber yard. Our floors are white oak, so the color might be a little redder if yours are red oak. You would need to sample a few boards from the lumber yard. Finish with an oil based polycrylic from Absco.
