motherbear Mother Nature's process is called OXIDATION. I think they artificially speed up the process by applying an acid? They then stop the process when the desired look is achieved and seal the metal to prevent further rusting. Google "oxidized CORTEN steel" for better info.

Phillips Garden We just allow the steel to weather naturally. It takes about a year or so to get a good coating and then the oxidation process slows. With corten/weathering steel the alloy composition is such that the outer rust layers creates a protective barrier and slow the oxidation process thus extending the life of the material.
