Although I am preaching the removal of all contrasting trim, it still has a place within this trend. For this dining room, designer Allison Cosmos maintained the white crown molding with silver walls and a silver ceiling flanking it. A small accent of white along the trim maintains a continuity yet still allows the hint of silver in the framed art to advance into the foreground. "You are not distracted by the colors outside the palette, and you can focus on pulling the room together as a whole," notes Allison.

Can you have crown moldings if you don't have high ceilings?Most of us live with much lower ceilings than in the last several examples, but that doesn't mean we can't have crown molding. One just needs to continue to consider the scale of the room and the style of the home and furnishings. My guess is that this room has 8- to 9-foot ceilings. The moldings are proportioned well to the height of the room — they look to be around 5" wide — and the profile of the molding is quite simple which works with the transitional style of the furnishings and art. The moldings create a nice framework around the metallic painted ceiling and crystal chandelier.

Beth's choice 3: Symmetrical gallery wallB: Sometimes it's fun to get creative with a grouping, but, at then end of the day, there's nothing like symmetry to really pull it all together. These prints are perfect for a dining room, a place where, if you ask me, the beautiful plate of food should be the most outstanding thing.

Choose a mat that contrasts with the color of the art. Generally, you can't go wrong with classic white or cream (trendy colors are a big no-no, unless you don't mind swapping them out every few years). But black and white photos, line drawings and pencil sketches can look striking with a surround of black. Just be sure there's a strong contrast between the art and the mat — a murky piece will disappear in a field of darkness.
