Regarding the Aidlin Darling Design staircase. It looks like the construction of the support can be traditional and the treads then sit on top to give it the design element. I'm trying to find out how complicated it is to install this staircase, or it is is wildly more expensive that a traditional staircase. »
bepsf Yes - This would be crazy expensive:
Just look at all the work that went into the sheetrock/plaster work, those thick stairtreads and landing, the lack of mouldings to hide imperfect sheetrock edges, the custom SS rail and frosted glass wall...
Whenever you see something that appears simple - It never is and always costs more!
Another example of a partial cantilever echoes the previous example, but here the risers match the white walls, not the steps. The thick wood of the treads reinforces the way they float, without the need for additional structure.

Cantilevered Stairs: Walking on Air (9 / 15)
...shows that the cantilever is about one-third of the stair's width. The way the wood risers are designed to match the treads is well done. I would love to see the risers function as drawers to take advantage of the space underneath.
