You'll need at least the space to close the door without squeezing yourself. Usually all shower door opens to the outside because there is another risk is if a shower door let just open to the inside. If someone collapses inside the shower and is laying behind the door, you can't open it anymore.

They use a double swing hinge so that the door can be left in the 'open-in' position while the shower spray drips off, but can be opened outward as well for safety. They usually suggest a 24-26" door width.
