height of TV - How high is the TV hung? What is the general rule of thumb for comfortable viewing? Do you have an opinion. I love this look of the fireplace with the TV above, but is ok for watching? »
Elizabeth Reich It depends on the distance between the sofa and the TV. The further away it is, the less of an angle for viewing. Sometimes the mantle is just too high for comfortable viewing.
Elizabeth Reich Thank you. They have an electronic eye so the media equipment can be hidden, however they don't use a Wii in this room. They have all of that set up in the lower level.
How hard it is it to mount the tv on the stone? Where is the wiring? - We are moving to a house with a similar fireplace. Trying to figure out where to put tv since room is mostly windows and french doors. If we don't mount the tv, chairs will have to have their backs to fireplace in order to see tv. »
Elizabeth Reich This was done by the builder. You can talk with a good audio visual company to see about having them help you hide the wires. There is also a remote eye that can take the place of large equipment so that you can hide it in another location. Not sure what your condition is exactly, but you could try hiding some wiring in a mantle creatively. For example, if you had a large rustic looking wooden mantle attached to the stone, you could theoretically carve out some space for the wires to be hidden. Good luck!
Media Decor I agree with Elizabeth about getting an av specialist to penetrate the stone and run a wire chase to remote location to house the dvd player, amplifier, etc. This is a must and typically not that difficult. Mounting the TV to the stone is another matter. A back plate (typically PVC or plywood) should be fastened into the stone. Then opening in the backplate should expose the wiring. Now the TV is mounted to the backplate and adjusted to be parallel to the stone.
A casement that attaches to the backplate will conceal the wiring completely and make the TV look like a piece of purposeful furniture. The casement can be faux painted to match the stone or simply be an espresso stained walnut to blend into the room decor. It is worth the effort.
Elizabeth Reich I didn't specify the stone, it was in place when I started on the job. If you like this look I'd suggest showing it to your stone mason and asking to see similar for your job.
Elizabeth Reich Hi Lori and Molly, I am sorry for the delay, I will ask and get a price for you both. Where are you located? As far as a more neutral palette, I would have to check to see what they have available. Thanks! Will get back to you. Sometimes it pays to mix and match bits and pieces and the result is just stunning. Who would have thought that all these different textures and patterns would blend and merge so beautifully together?
