Resulting from a devastating plumbing failure and house flood, this 1980’s kitchen was transformed from a tired façade and wasted space into a modern, updated and functional plan which transcended many challenges.

Incorporating a refrigerator, pantry and wall ovens with a separate cooktop within the existing walls produced many spatial challenges. With access to the dining room within 4 feet, the existing doorway was enclosed which lengthened the cooking wall of the kitchen and separated the “tall” cabinets.

Ample lighting was an important feature. However, lighting challenges were created by a spacious vaulted ceiling encompassing the kitchen, breakfast room and family room This was tackled with task lighting inside and under the cabinets and recessed ceiling lights as well as a suspended rail system with directional task lights and decorative pendants over the seating area of the island.

An L-shape kitchen with angular island which created much wasted space within the kitchen. Moving the plumbing allowed for an 3-level island which provided a multi-functional solution. These included a “floating” bamboo counter over a furniture-inspired cabinet, a central curved granite top and a raised cabinet with a metallic copper coated glass counter acting as a serving bar which included a bookshelf and tempered glass cabinets.

Other tricks used include a flip down drawer front hiding outlets in the side of the buffet cabinet and plug molding mounted beneath the upper cabinets to keep the tile backsplash clean and free from interruptions.

Natural maple gives the kitchen a cool, open effect. Wide-stile mitred doors provide a link between the traditional stylings of the wife and European-look desired by the husband. Their collection of brightly colored Italian pottery needed a backdrop to allow it to shine . The dark stained walnut surround gave the refrigerator and pantry area and stature of prominence that was needed to match the scale of the open floor plan and vaulted ceiling.
