What kind of wood are the desk top and shelves made from and where did you buy it? Thanks! - This room has the perfect balance of energy and focus that a home office needs »
jws91 Hi, you could make the shelves yourself easily by going to Home Depot and buying a sheet of maple high quality grade plywood (about $45 per 4ft by 8 ft sheet) and wood trim (maybe 3/4" by 2" trim). HD will cut the plywood into shelf sizes you need for free or a few dollars and you then finish nail the trim onto the edge of three sides of the plywood to cover up the raw plywood edge. This creates a nice thick wood look to the shelves. Paint with primer and paint or with clear varnish. There is so much you can do with high grade plywood and trim. I learned the secret from a carpenter I hired from Craigslist. He made all my custom shelves for a 9'x12' closet and it cost me in labor and material less than one third what a commercial closet company would have charged.
Plan office storage with efficiency in mind. The storage areas directly around your desk — drawers, shelves, cabinets and surfaces — should be reserved for frequently used essential items. If you purchase some office supplies in bulk or have equipment that is very seldom used, store it on the highest shelves or in a different room altogether if you are short on space.
