Love this! I am currently building a new home..having a stucco dilemma. - I like the natural stucco look also, but am being asked to use the acrylic /mortar mix due to durability, etc. Thoughts? Also, what type of stucco texturing do you prefer? Apparently I will lose texturing options using acrylic? Please help! Rest of exterior: brick and "natural" stone. »
Natural stucco. Though it costs a little more and requires a little more maintenance, there are many reasons to use natural stucco over synthetic stucco — the best of which is that natural stucco will take on a patina as it ages that a synthetic stucco just won't. So rather than all uniform and monolithic, I'll choose uneven and full of character.
Clay tiles
Clay tiles are a good option for homeowners looking for durable, fireproof, and insect proof roofing. However, clay tiles have a look that is only associated with certain types of architecture, making them a poor aesthetic option for homes traditionally not found in the south and southwest. Another consideration before choosing clay tiles is their relatively heavy weight and expense. Your roof should be evaluated before installing clay tiles to allay any structural concerns.
Let's start with exterior architectural styling. Though this will depend greatly on locale and site, this tiny "Mediterranean" cottage with its stucco walls, tile roof and low slung ranch profile has long been a personal favorite for me. It is warm, earthy, unpretentious.
