It is pachysandra and boxwod. They do well in full sun - with lots of watering (these are planted in full sun). The owner meticulously trims to keep them in that layered height look.

Oh, my - lucky you! I live in Ohio - and they do just fine. Pachysandra does well in low light or shade and boxwood goes anywhere. Check w/ your local greenhouse or online for specific growing habits. Good Luck!

elainejk is correct. Pachysnadra at the edge of the turf, Buxus sempervirens 'Green Mountain' (Boxwood) to the back. Happy gardening.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Frank Organ added this to Unsung Garden Hero: Fantastic Foliage
Subtle contrast. The amazing sweep of Pachysandra terminalis and Buxus in this garden shows us why the sole use of foliage plants can be so dramatic. Though both plants will flower, the whole emphasis of the design is the wonderful contrast of subtle leaf color and texture.
Stick With One UndertoneWhen combining textures, it is best to start out with plants that have the same undertones. Combining blue and yellow undertones is tricky business, so stick with one or the other. This combination offers textural differences with a yellow undertone.
Planting notes.Soil should be moist and well drained; Pachysandra prefers acidic soils but can tolerate neutral and slightly alkaline soils.Edge the boundaries of the area where you are planting to prevent spreading.Place the plants about 8 inches apart. If you are anxious to get complete coverage right away, you may plant them closer together, but patience (that is, waiting a few years for them to get established) can save you a lot of money.Water the area and gently add a layer of mulch.Make sure the soil is moist and well drained. After a few years, you'll have a dense cover. Don't let it get too dense; thin the plants if necessary.
Boxwood is also the de facto shrub for complex parterres, acrobatic knot gardens and border trims. It takes to incessant clipping like no other. As such, it is one of the most useful live building blocks available to designers.USDA zones: 5 or 6 to 8 Water requirement: Moist soilLight requirement: Full sun to dappled shadeMature size: Very variableSeasonal interest: Year-roundWhen to plant: Anytime
The use of just two plant species against a closely mown lawn shows how clever use of both tone and texture can provide just as much interest as a flowering border.Clipped boxwood was used here, allowing the fresh lime-green growth to contrast the shiny foliage of the Japanese spurge (Pachysandra terminalis).

I like this shrub bed bordering the yard, I like it as a transition from one level to another, like that it is not too wide so can trim and clean from top and bottom without too much difficulty, might work well as part of our yard, bordering in the corner where we will have a few trees/shrubs to use up and beautify that area . . .
