Finishes on IPE wood - We are looking to finish the Ipe wood we received before having it built into front steps. We love the colour of this wood, what do we use to have it stay this colour?
Thank you in advance!

mcbeigh Thanks very much for your reply. I'm undecided as to whether we should seal it or let it gray, also love the look of the grey. Thanks again. Michèle
Widner Product Finishing I use a combination of two german products, called Fuhr and Klumpp. Fuhr is the primer and then I buff on an oil to enhance the sheen. I have never had anything other than remarkable results. Tongue oil, linseed oil, rosewood oil always turn blotchy over time, which requires continual maintenance at a level not required with the other products I use. It still calls for maintenance, but it can be spot checked since the sealer I use does not bond to itself.
The entire tub room is lined and waterproof. Ipe wood covers the walls and floor, while the ceiling is marine plywood. Ipe was also used on the outdoor deck to create an indoor-outdoor feel. A staircase from the deck leads down to the beach, so this is a perfect spot for rinsing off on the way back into the house.Tub: Nouveau, Hastings Tile & Bath
Bring nature in. As with workspaces, kitchens and bathrooms can become so utilitarian that they feel cold and impersonal. Warm things up with small potted plants in the bath (ferns do well in this humid space) and herbs in the kitchen, along with rustic woods and hand-thrown pottery.

look into a deck sealer or use a tongue oil, these will require yearly maintenance - if the ipe ever gets gray a sanding will take the gray off and reveal its rich warm color again. we have not applied anything to ours as we are allowing it to gray.

Nice. I like the idea of a separate 'tub room.' I think my preference for future home would be to have only one or two tubs to be shared by the whole household with only showers in bathrooms adjoining bedrooms.
