Yes, we made the base cabinets in this run shallower than normal--15" deep on the bottom, and 12" deep on top, if I remember correctly--but the reason we made it that shallow was not a function of the cabinets' purpose. Rather, it was because the architect had made the laundry room too narrow. Our client really, really wanted to put a work table in the center of the room, and the only way to make that table fit was too find a very narrow (24" wide) work table, and to reduce the depth of the cabinets on the storage wall as much. as possible.
Drawers and station (lowers) are what I'm thinking. Holding gift bags, stocked up cards, big drawer/door to hold gifts while I wait to wrap, ribbon, bows, large rolls of wrapping paper in drawers or on dowels....
