What is the actual rangehood made of - Wondering how I can get a similar hood for a 36" cooktop. Is this made of cabinet wood or stone? Approximate price of similar hood for a 36: cooktop. LOVE IT! Manufacturer?? »
Design Moe Kitchen & Bath / Heather Moe designer This hood is made of maple. It was custom built and finished by Christiana Cabinetry of Pennsylvania. They are a high-end American cabinet company, and I would guess that a 36” hood surround in the same style would price out at around $4- 5000. Remember that you still would have to buy a ventilation system, which will add another $1-2,000. Another option, if you are willing to do the research, is to find a skilled cabinet maker locally who could build you a custom version based on the photo. Be sure to approve a complete set of working drawings before you pay any deposits or sign any contracts, and make sure you understand them. I have worked with many wonderful and skilled cabinet-makers, but I have also had to deal with cabinet guys who casually take on a project at a low price, and then change the key details [like the curved chimney piece] to make it easier to build. Then when the commissioned piece is delivered, and the client notices the changes, the unscrupulous worker turns it around and says something like, “You can’t expect me to make a curved hood for the low price you’re paying me.” This is why most designers tend to prefer their regular, proven resources, even though (to a layman), they may seem a little pricier.

Design Moe Kitchen & Bath / Heather Moe designer In kitchen design, it's always a good idea to start with the appliances. In this case it means picking out both your range (or cook top) and the ventilation unit that you would like to use in the rangehood above. Then look in the "Specifications" (usually found online under the appliance manufacturer & model number) for required clearances & dimensions. Having said that, I'm not adverse to bending rules, especially when installing professional equipment for residential use. For example, you'll see that it is recommended that the range hood have a capture area about 6" larger than the range in each direction, and also that the recommended height is 30" above the cooking surface. Most homeowners, however, don't want to bang their foreheads on the hood and are willing to trade efficacy for comfort. This means that we routinely design hoods at 21" to 24" deep (rather than the recommended 30") and we usually set them at 36" above the cooking surface.
Design Moe Kitchen & Bath / Heather Moe designer The countertops in this kitchen are polished Michelangelo marble from Italy with a 1.5" classic "ogee square" edge detail. I would call the style of the room "French Country," although it definitely reflects a more formal interpretation of the style.
Design Moe Kitchen & Bath / Heather Moe designer The hood is 80" wide. We started with the 48" Wolf range, then we added 11" on each side to comfortably accommodate the 9" wide corbels. Although the ceiling over the hood (limited to 112" high at this area by the roof trusses) was just barely tall enough for this type of "grand" design, the angled, coffered ceiling at the center of the room adds height.
Design Moe Kitchen & Bath / Heather Moe designer If you are asking about the carvings, we purchased the corbels and rope moldings from Enkeboll Designs (look online) and had the cabinet manufacturer finish them to match. If you are asking about the tile mural, this is a custom marble mosaic mural from Waterworks (look at their website to find a local store or an outside sales rep) that was about 13' long as it wrapped around the kitchen. We matched the colors to the marble. (As you can imagine, it was somewhat pricey.)

This still-life backsplash is a work of art; there's no other word for it. Yet at the same time it can handle grease spatters and a good scrubbing. How many art forms can make that statement?
