What kind of a look are you going for? I always ask clients to begin by choosing 3 words that describe how they want the room to look and/or fell when it's finished. Those words really help us make decisions along the way. This room might use the words colorful, exciting and inviting. What are your words for your room? Then I'm sure your fellow Houzz readers will be happy to help you choose colors!

I am looking for something elegant and traditional. I would like the room to be imbued with some pop and color but nothing radical. Currently, the wall in the living room are more subdued than the ones pictured above; a couple tones lighter. The curtains have a vivid green floral design with a light gold tone background. The floors are a light /blonde colored hardwood. The only other piece of furniture that would remain is a large cherry wood colored media/entertainment console. I would like to know which colors for the sofa, chair and rug would work well within these guidlines. Would light colors (beige, tan, yellow) or darker colors, (brown) work best? No whites or blacks for the sofa and chair. Any suggestions on the accent pillows? Also, I need advice as to the color of the area rug. I do not want anything that is very neutral or plain. I prefer richer color. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

I find people buying new furniture and rugs tend to repaint anyway as it is much easier to find a paint to go with the rug you love than visa versa. That said, cream or golden tan would probably work on the furniture with your existing yellow walls. If your yellow is clear stay away from light beige as it will just look dingy next to a clean yellow. Use your curtains as a jumping off point, pulling the most neutral tone for the furniture and use the vibrant tones as accents. Look for a rugs in muted tones of red/brown(to tie in the console) and gold.

Thank you for your specific suggestions. I understand what youo mean about repainting but i am decorating the room for my parents and they will not change the recently painted walls. These are the parameters I have to work with. The golden tan and cream sound very good. Do you have any other color ideas for the accent pillows? The only other vivid color on the curtains is the green. Thank you again for your wonderful assistance.

complimentary colors! Purple is red and blue so yellow is the compliment. Ditto orange and blue, red and green.
