Florida Island House

Dusk at island house in southern Florida, custom-designed and pre-cut by Habitat Post & Beam, Inc. This house was ferried to the job site where it was assembled by a local builder. Photos by Michael Penney, architectural photographer IMPORTANT NOTE: We are not involved in the finish or decoration of these homes, so it is unlikely that we can answer any questions about elements that were not part of our kit package, i.e., specific elements of the spaces such as appliances, colors, lighting, furniture, landscaping, etc.

Wood used throughout - Hard to believe this home showed up on the beach one day and was assembled! Not your ordinary home in a box...I am interested to know about the wood used on the exterior siding and decking and the interior beams a ceiling. Just gorgeous!

Dear carribigras: This home kit was painstakingly ferried in pieces from the mainland (which seemed pretty close, until the ferrying actually began!) The customers of this home decided not to use the siding we include in our material package and purchased it "locally" instead. Our best guess from these photos is that they are untreated cedar clapboards. We do not include exterior deck material in our material packages, so the outdoor decking was purchased locally by their contractor (since the clients are overseas and this house is over 10 years old, we have since lost contact with them). Girders, ridge beams and purlins are southern yellow pine premium laminated beams or 6x-based solid Douglas fir, depending on structural loads. Posts and joists are 6x6 or 6x8 solid Douglas fir. The mid-floor decking (ceiling) material is western pine plank decking. Hopefully this was helpful.

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Living with nature. If one single event in 2012 had long-term consequences for the future of architecture it was Hurricane Sandy, which hit the East Coast of the U.S. in late October. Responses to climate change are finally entering the political picture, after being batted about by architects, landscape architects, urban planners and others for years. While the impact of rising seawater points to big fixes (levees, locks and the like) and questions where we build, not all responses need to be big. This Florida island house points to one tactic: raising a building's living spaces above high waters.
