Art Finds a Home

Contemporary Exterior, Ottawa

When this home was new in 1988, it won an award for Architectural excellence in South Florida. Not surprisingly, there was little that needed to be done to modify the structure and composition of this home. Our client, an Ottawa businessman and avid art collector, did want a completely renovation with an entirely new interior. Our principal mandate was to focus on creating interesting spaces to showcase the art collection. The primary focal point was the creation of an interior architectural feature in the foyer and living room. This structure pays homage to the architecture of the home and provides a dramatic display and storage space for the exquisite collection of 50’s Danish glassware. Aligned with the entry doors, is an impressive shelving unit that has the lighting built into the back of the shelves. The shelves slide out for re-lamping. This interior architectural feature is repeated in the kitchen and family room where the cabinetry becomes the art. In keeping with the minimalist modern architecture, the house was finished with no trim whatsoever. Even the obligatory baseboard was designed to be flush with the wall. A rich walnut floor provides a dramatic contrast to the white walls throughout
