This house had a useless back porch, oddly configured kitchen, and walls all over the place so the kitchen was completely blocked off from the rest of the house. The renovation included a two story addition to expand the kitchen and the master suite, add a family room and make this space ideal for family and entertaining.

Furnish the island like a dining table. “Instead of using standard-sized stools at an island area, use an oversized, stylish design that allow your guests to sit as comfortably through a meal as they would at a formal dining table,” says interior designer Claire Ownby. “Using an upgraded or plush fabric on the stools can make the seating feel more luxurious.”
Mom and Dad both initially like, mom likes "cleaner lines" and contrast of floor and cabinets, also likes (surprisingly) the chairs because of contrast. They don't like the fact that the island is more of a table.
Separate work spaces: cook prep x 2, dish wash, baking, island with small sink and nothing else, appliance garage.
Dark w/ light cabinets. Gray backsplash. Nice mix of windows and wall cabinets.
