I became complicated (mentally, trying to understand) in designing the kitchen when wanting to incorporate the little bar opening that is already existing between the kitchen and den. If we did a opening similar to this, it could ease the flow of entertaining that the space would require. Also, if the dining and the den along with the kitchen were all somewhat open to one another, it could create the feel of a grand open space- not to mention the opening leading to the stairs down below- dragging that feeling of openness downstairs.
