I love this style of fireplace. What is it called? I've seen these gigantic fireplaces in old movies - what style of fireplace is this, and what is it called?
Thanks,

kandy smith I'd also like to know the answer to this.
Is a gas log fireplace as efficient as a wood burning or pellet stove for heating a space?
Thank you :)
Bill Fry Construction - Wm. H. Fry Const. Co. You most certainly can heat your home with a wood burning or pellet stove and Uncle Sam will give you a tax credit for purchasing one (as long as it meets certain requirements). Here is one of many links: http://www.harmanstoves.com/taxcredit/stimulus-tax-credit-stove.asp
Chopping your own wood is quite a fitness regimen as well - with a wood burning stove you heat your body twice, when you chop it AND when you burn it!
The downside of woodburning stoves is that you have enough room to store the wood in a dry place.
The range. Traditionally the biggest feature in a Victorian kitchen, the range usually sat within the chimney breast. If you have the room, a woodstove will make your Victorian kitchen cozy and atmospheric. Set it next to your dining table for mealtime warmth and add some cast iron or copper pots and pans for authenticity.
If I have a few square feet to spare, I would consider something like this for the kitchen. Winter mornings aren't snowy in Seattle, but they definitely are chilly, and a tea kettle sitting on top of a small wood burning range would definitely warm achy "old" bones before going to the barn to tend to the livestock.
