Scott Haig, CKD Hi gataree, thank you for your interest and kind comment: The vanity/sink area is very well lit, with or without the ceiling incandescents--however the color-rendering is not the greatest with only fluorescent lamps. In this bathroom, the application of make-up happens where the white chair with the cut-outs sits--opposite the vanity/sink. The make-up area provides better color rendering, with incandescent lights above it, and a fluorescent magnifiying mirror. I hope this helps--thanks again.
Illuminated opening with shelf above bathtub - Could you tell me what type of light did you use to illuminate the opening? Is there a on/off switch? Is the blue color the only one available? »
szewczr Hi Scott. Thank you for your prompt response. Could you tell me more details about these LED lights, like model # or manufacturer? Is there a need for a step down transformer? Also could you provide more details and switch/controller? Is the controller part of the light assembly or needs to be purchased separately? Thank you in advance for your help. Regards. Rich
Scott Haig, CKD Hi Rich, this adventurous client allowed me to experiment with various lighting techniques in this project, which was great. These particular lights were purchased from Ikea, and were included in a package called Dioder, which came with a switch/controller already attached, as well as a driver/transformer. The driver was installed on the side of the base cabinet and the switch/controller was installed inside a drawer at the make-up table. Hope this help you--thanks, Scott
Recessed Lighting - Can you tell me what the specs are for these tiny recessed lights? Is there a rule of thumb as to spacing in a bathroom? Thank you. This is a beautiful space. »
Bob Sherer Thanks Scott for your very informative view on bathroom lighting. You have solved some major headaches for this diyr. Now i can explain to my wife what's taking so long. This takes much thought.
Scott Haig, CKD Hi Bob, I'm glad to be of some help with your project--as you correctly suggest, a lot of thought goes into a project in order for it to be well executed. Good planning is the primary tool for most any project. I hope your project goes well--and that you post some pictures when it's finished!
Mirror cabinet - I love these mirror cabinets!!!! I have a couple of qs. Do the cabinets have interior mirrors? What is the price for one cabinet? Where can I order it?
Thank you! Susana carpenter »
Pat Manning-Hanson, ASID Hi carpentersusana, These cabinets remind me of some that are available from a company by the name of Robern. We are able to order them through a resource at our local design center. I think some of their styles are available with interior mirrors. The price range is on the high end, but the quality is great.
Scott Haig, CKD Hey thank you very kindly--I hope this works well for your project! Another note: originally I had exposed fluorescent lighting along the sides, but the client requested they be covered--we used frosted glass that is hinged for access, which was a great suggestion by her, I think.
perler Scott, thanks for the more detailed information about how you backlit the niche. I was having trouble picturing a "tray" for the lights. Regarding the backlit vanity lights, they remind me of the mirrors they have in Banana Republic dressing rooms! Believe it or not, they are quite flattering. It's the same idea - the full length mirror is held away from the wall a few inches, enough room to mount flourescent lights behind all 4 sides of the mirror, if memory serves me right. It's a very nice, even, indirect light. Thanks again.
Scott Haig, CKD Thanks for asking. The mirrors are my own custom design: a rigid white frame with one fixed mirror on top and two operable lower mirrored doors below, concealing storage inside.
The units are wall-mounted with fluorescent lamps attached to the tops and both sides; the lamps are covered on the sides with a hinged piece of frosted glass, which acts as a diffuser. [The shelves just behind the faucets are also made of a thicker frosted glass, below which is more fluorescent lighting.]
At first I thought the lighting may be too overpowering, but I'm glad to say it works very well in the space, (with or without the overhead MR-16's).

Get help figuring out a lighting plan. Due to all of these factors, it can really pay off to have a designer help you with a lighting plan. Someone with knowledge about the lighting options will be able to maxmize energy efficiency and help you get the color in the room just right.Fluorescent tubes are placed behind the mirrors in this room. Incandescent recessed lighting and LED accents make for an interesting mix.
i will ahev this in my bathroom and my room because with my great big windows i wont have to have a bunch of light in the house because i will have it outside. feeling great because i dont have to pay abunch on electricty.
I designed these units and they were custom-built by the contractor, and are 24" x 36". They could be recessed; however in this installation I wanted the lighting to be concealed, so that the entire area would glow with the light. Also, for what it's worth: recessing the mirrors puts them even farther away from the user when they need to be close to the task at hand. Thanks for asking--I hope this helps!
