Thank you so much - we love this kitchen as well! The perimeter is honed absolute black granite and the island is end grain hard maple from Grothouse Lumber.

Framed opening... - I would assume this opening, framed in reclaimed timber (beautiful!), is a load bearing wall, yes? We are planning a kitchen remodel and are trying to decide to create a pass-through island/counter UNTIL I came across this idea -- I'm interested in your thoughts comparing pass through vs. framing out the space like you did here...

What Houzz contributors are saying:

Lily Gahagan added this to Design Details: Rustic Beams
Framing a door with reclaimed wood gives the same warmth as ceiling beams but can be done after the home is built, unlike many overhead projects.
Rebekah Zaveloff | KitchenLab added this to The New (Smaller) Great Room
Reclaimed barn-wood beams are cleverly used in place of a cased opening between this kitchen and family room. Having an architectural transition helps to define two rooms open to one another.
Pangaea Interior Design, Portland, OR added this to Design Details: Moldings — or Not?
Instead of using carved moldings, rustic beams add a casual farmhouse look to this space.
More reclaimed wood frames an opening and adds a rustic feel to this space.Tell us: Have you removed a wall in your house? Please show us what you did in the Comments section below!More: Diagrams and details for opening up a space
Rock Paper Hammer added this to Tearing Down a Wall? 6 Ways to Treat the Opening
Whether you choose to make a feature out of your wall opening or to keep the transition between rooms as smooth as possible, an architect can help determine the right solution for your style and budget.More: How to change a load-bearing wall to make two rooms into one
Mitchell Parker added this to What to Know Before You Tear Down That Wall
Dealing with what’s inside the walls is a major factor in removing a wall. Rerouting gas, electrical, HVAC and more can make all the difference. For example, relocating supply and return vents can impact how your heating system works. “If you remove the supply ducts, it makes the house feel less comfortable,” Veffer says. “You get a ripple effect.” Plus, he says, you never know what you might find in the walls. When removing a wall in a 1920s house, he found an unused gas line running to the second floor. He had to bring in a professional to remove it — an expense the homeowner hadn’t anticipated. Cost: It all depends on the kind of wall and what embedded systems will need rerouting. Labor costs also vary by region. Here are Andreson’s estimates: To remove a non-load-bearing wall, one story or two, when you’re installing carpet: $2,500 to $3,000To remove a single-story, load-bearing wall: about $10,000 To remove a two-story load-bearing wall: $20,000 to $30,000Whatever your budget, Veffer suggests adding 20 percent for any unforeseen things that may come up inside the walls. See some other surprises people have found in their walls

Do not get me wrong. I chose this image because it shows one of the rare looks of an open kitchen that does in some way please me (no not the white wood). It is that wood 'frame' there at the entrance and the lamps - the island little bit, but not much. I really do not like bar chairs, because with my back it is not even so good idea to try to climb on one. But that aside. The matter of a fact is that I hate open kitchens. Reasons why I don't like open kitchens, in no particular order: 1. Even with a range hood over the cook top to suck the fumes out or circulate them - all kitchens fill the air with grease to land on surfaces. Also those hard to reach or not always the first to be cleaned places like tops of high furniture. You all know how it can make that dark sticky dust. But in the open kitchen it will also land on the book shelves, the sofa - TV - or the computers. (And I have habit of wanting to own the books I read - and I do mean I have read all that I own. Even though those must be left behind when I move officially - there are 400+ of them - and I think more books will appear to the new place too.) 2. I have hard time doing my house hold work due to a permanent injury causing ever present pain. Such things like dishes take me bit long sometimes - I would feel rather shamed to have a quest there on the sofa to watch the space art of dirty dishes. But it is not just that - I do think kitchens will always be bit messy and would like the living space to be more relaxed in the sense of not having the work to be done there to remind about itself. So - also - no dining table up on which everyone who walk past will put anything which is bit extra in their hands at any given moment. 3. On one hand I do want a kitchen where everything has its exact and easily accessible place to exist and reach to - but on the other it will be that heart of my small family where we talk with each other. So no communicating with the lure of TV being turned on - especially while eating with the child there or quests. I find it bit impolite if someone turns on their TV when I visit their home - or if they start doing things like dishes while I am there. The first because I can't then make the difference to what is said on the TV and what is said around the table. Second being like I had come at the wrong moment to disturb their household chores. My reasons go on and on. I can't be made to change my mind with arguments about it being 'nice' to entertain while cooking or that it gives light or space. My opinion is that 1. You can prepare for the arrival of the quests forehand or invite them to cook with you. 2. Even a narrow window makes nice light for the room - but one can design the lighting that is good for working and let the bit less of light for the nice mood. Even my living room can do with less light because the computers would stand there - and the screens would need that shade. 3. It is always more of the illusion of space than actual space. A bar-table or call it the 'break back first table' if you must (lol) - it takes more room than a wall.. and there is no acceptable way to separate the dining area from the living area that I can think to work. No screen, no curtain - no placing of furniture - no carpet to make an illusion of a room - not even some horrid modern book case that can be seen through. So for me there is no other way really to like the kitchen or the living room - except to have them separated by good measure of wall. So how in the world could I accept a open kitchen - if I have to? Why might I have to do with the open plan? Because of the supply of real estate in our area. I will have small budget and in central Europe certain things like fitted, fully furnished with appliances, kitchens are a bit of a luxury that costs. The appliances are not considered to be 'fixed' and if the apartment has even just the full set of cupboards - the price tag gains weight fast. (More likely the fixed cabinets forgotten behind are different styles and not at all 'fitted'.) One way to save in money is to buy a bit smaller place which have usually been opened to the (age old 'modern plan' - my granny's house had open kitchen for 200 years and the idea has been around ages). A newly built home has the closed version even more rarely. The larger, but bit cheaper older apartments are in so very worn condition over all that it would be costly to fix. My 'cry' on this matter might find many to tell me that I am too much demanding or making a horse out of an fly of an issue. 'You just do with what you can.' Right. The trouble is that I feel discouraged. Even with initially nice images like this - to imagine if that was mine - I feel sad. It is like that wall might just be a dream crushed before it even had a change. I'll say it again - that is nice kitchen - exceptionally so - but it is not my ideal.
