Columbus’s quest to discover a western trade route to the exotic spice ports in the East Indies, led to the discovery of tropical islands in the Caribbean that became known as the West Indies. Despite the variety of architectural and design influences from Europe, there are several indigenous design elements that are iconic to these islands.

Woven cane and rattan furnishings were airy and light in this humid, tropical environment. Gauzy fabrics, sun-baked colors, and louvered shutters were hallmarks. Heavy woods, like Mahogany, held up well in the tropics, and rich dark finishes were common. Islanders used tropical motifs in their furniture carvings – palm fronds, pineapples, and other island flora.

Dura Supreme Cabinetry Thank you for your question. The backsplash tile is the "Rustic Walnut Blend Mini Versa Alpha" from Kate-Lo Tile & Stone.

Dura Supreme Cabinetry Thank you! The wood on the wine rack, the kitchen island, and the island turn posts is Lyptus. Lyptus is a really interesting wood species and is similar to Mahogany with its rich, red coloring but has more variation. It’s a great choice if you prefer eco-friendly and sustainable wood species. Lyptus is a hybrid of the Eucalyptus plant. A notable environmental advantage is that trees grow to full maturity in 15 years (compared to 50+ years for most domestic hardwoods). Lyptus is also used on the rest of the kitchen cabinetry of this photo, but in a different finish than the kitchen island.

The bamboo turn post is carved to look similar to a bamboo cane like you said, but in this case is in Lyptus.

If I cannot have white cabinets and change to darker floors, then this may be an option...darken our cabinets and keep the lighter floor. In any case I want the island to be different from the cabinets rather than the same as it currently is...
