Best to check your local codes, but for a general idea of stair dimensions:
Width - no less than 2'8, standard 3'6, two handrails required for more than 44"
Tread (step) no less than 10 inches
RIser (vertical face of the step) no more than 7 3/4 inches
Every step has to be the same to ensure there is no tripping hazard, and the angle of the stairs is determined by the ratio of the step rise to the step run. Basically, how far and how high you need to go to get from "A" to "B". Hope that helps!
Architect Andrew Morrall The I Codes, sec. 1009.1, exception 1 allows stairways serving an occupant load less than 50 (most if not all single family houses!) to be 36" wide. I find this a bit tight, so for main staircases I usually don't go less than 3'-2". There are additional code requirements for stairs, best to consult the standard building codes and local codes.
frankovitchjm The wood in the kitchen is an engineered bamboo. It is made by combining a light and dark shredded bamboo which gives it the brindle pattern. I believe the product is called Synergy Bamboo.
Niki Papadopoulos Based on the color of the floors and same color around the art niche, I am guessing the stair risers are painted in the same finish. I have used the Porch paint from Sherwin Williams for this type of application and it works well. Good Luck!
Can I use 2 woods. One upstairs, one down - Downstairs is a traditional oak floor with black graining. I have chosen for my second floor coincidentally almost the same black bamboo flooring you have used.
If I copied your use of black risers and my existing oak tread - will this work.for me?
I am thrilled to have found your photo - love it! »

A raised floor and slightly dropped ceiling defines the kitchen space and creates the feeling of a stage. In the living room, the oak paneling from the entry appears again in the TV inset.
Give prized possessions their own architectural frame inside a wall. Not only does it add interest, It helps convey to guests the personal importance of the art or other object to the homeowner.
Only a couple steps separates this living room and this kitchen with dining island beyond. In the far distance, where a curving wood wall can be glimpsed, is a sitting room a couple steps down from the kitchen. This gives this central space more prominence than the spaces with dark wood flooring that flank it.
It can be tricky to use two kinds of wood flooring in the same house. If they are too similar in grain and color, it can look like an unsuccessful attempt to match them. This home shows a beautiful use of two kinds of wood flooring. They work together beautifully for a few reasons:
1. They are strikingly different in color, yet the lighter flooring has a variety of colors pulling in some of the deep color of the darker wood flooring.
2. They are on different levels, so there is a clear place to stop one and start the other.
3. They define different areas of the home.
