Emily Hurley It's so hard to see, but I think it is actually tile...it looks like it might echo the pattern you see behind the range at the back of the kitchen.

windknot Where are you located? These are hand hewn beams and can be purchased through reclaimed lumber dealers. Tell your builder to look into timber frame trusses.
